There may be no “i” in team, but it’s an important letter when it comes to the future of personal transportation. “i” is a shortcut to express the visionary vehicles of the future already being developed by BMW. At the recent Frankfurt Auto Show, BMW’s i Vision Dynamics Group unveiled the four-door electric Gran Coupe, a premium vehicle with a range of nearly 300 miles and top speed of 120 mph. It offers a look into the future for electric mobility from the leader in that category, BMW. “At the BMW Group, the future of electric mobility has already arrived,” according to BMW Chairman Harald Kruger. “We have more electrified vehicles on the road than any established competitor and are committed to expanding our activities in the field of electric mobility as part of our NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy. By 2025 we will be offering 25 models with an electrified drive system – of which 12 will be pure electric.” See all the innovative technology already offered when you visit Chapman BMW on Camelback.

See Car of Tomorrow Today

Take a look at the picture above to see the future of transportation. The i Vision Dynamics vehicle offers a smooth roofline that accentuates a long wheelbase with very short overhangs that create a sophisticated design brimming with elegance. Sculpted surfaces flesh out the profile while providing an aerodynamic model that delivers the ultimate in performance and efficiency. You can barely see where the parts come together or where the metal stops and the glass begins. The result is an understated style that almost seems to fly as it cuts through the air. “BMW i is the innovation driver for the BMW Group,” according to board member Klaus Frohlich. “Here, visionary solutions and future-ready concepts become reality for the first time. But BMW i also acts as a spearhead of innovation for our other brands. The BMW i Vision Dynamics allows us to show right now what another electric BMW might look like. And BMW has demonstrated its talent for turning visions into real life throughout its history.”

Car or Spaceship? You Decide

The innovative i Vision Dynamics vehicle is as much spaceship as it is car, with a window profile that ties back to the current “i” lineup. A symmetrical layout gives the same great view to all passengers as well as the driver. Full-length glass on the sides will become more important as we move to autonomous driving, so all passengers have the same great transportation experience. Leading the way again into a future where electrified vehicles are the norm and not the exception, BMW recently announced a new era of mobility with the i3 and all-new i3S. The BMW i3 is already a popular commuter car, but now comes with a wider and sportier look. The i3S offers an extremely dynamic option in electrified vehicles, with powerfully shaped exterior body style, a sports suspension that delivers a lower ride and a high-performance motor with a Sport option. Both the new BMW i3 and i3S will be coming to Chapman BMW on Camelback later this year.

Enhanced i3 Morphs into Efficient Machine

Even though it is the best-selling compact electric vehicle in the premium market, the i3 underwent some tweaking by BMW engineers to offer refreshed styling, new digital programs and some cutting-edge features. BMW has improved the handling of the i3 by updating the Dynamic Stability Control. This new traction control feature guarantees supreme handling in all types of weather conditions, with greater agility at faster speeds and through tight corners. The powerful electric engine pumps out 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, more than enough to get your attention in this small, sophisticated vehicle. By pairing the motor with a one-speed automatic transmission, you’ll get a continuous buildup of power that propels the new i3 from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.2 seconds on the way to a top speed of 93 mph.

New i3S Delivers More Performance

If you want a little more zip in your giddy up while still driving a zero-emission vehicle, check out the BMW i3S. The i3S has a 184-horsepower engine that provides nearly 200 pound-feet of torque to get to 60 mph in just 6.8 seconds on the way to a top track speed of 100 mph. Select the SPORT mode to ignite a quicker accelerator response and fine tune the steering for even more road control. You can get a range extender  gas-powered two-cylinder engine on both the BMW i3 and i3S to propel a generator that charges the high-voltage battery. This increases the maximum range from a little less than 100 miles to almost 180 miles.

iDrive Provides Intuitive Interface

Both versions of the BMW i3 come with iDrive, an intuitive system for handling all the communication, infotainment and navigation functions of your vehicle. When you get the navigation option, the display is a large 10.25-inch screen with high definition resolution. Advanced voice recognition lets you control all the iDrive functions while you keep your eyes on the road.
