Undisputed Winner of Ward’s 10 Best Engines

By being named to the list 32 times in the last 21 years, BMW is the all time record holder for selection to Ward’s 10 Best Engines list. Ward’s, a leading consumer publication, has been creating the list for the last 22 years at an annual celebration in Detroit, the mecca for American automakers. “It is hard to improve on the previous inline-6 Twin Power Turbo, but this new engine provides more power and more torque, allowing the 340i xDrive to sprint from 0-60 mph in just 4.6 seconds,” according to Wards Auto content director Drew Winter. You can test drive the peppy new inline-6 cylinder by taking a trip to your Phoenix BMW dealer, Chapman BMW on Camelback.

Inline-6 Cylinder Has Been Around Since 1930s

BMW has had a very successful relationship with its inline-6 cylinder. First engineered in the 1930s for the 328, it has gone through many modifications including a change from natural aspiration to today’s twin turbochargers. “The last inline 6-cylinder turbo was the sublime N55, which earned 10 Best Engines stars in 2011, 2012 and 2013,” said Tom Murphy, Wards Auto World editor. “The block and head were completely re-engineered with a stroke that is extended by 0.19 inches and a bore diameter that is .08 inches smaller, as well a higher compression ratio.” The result is not only more torque but fuel efficiency of up to 27 miles per gallon during Wards testing.

740i, 340i Feature New B58 Powerplant

Although all BMWs sold in America benefit from TwinPower Turbo boost, only two have the new B58 engine. The 740i and the 340i are powered by the inline-6, which features a larger turbine wheel and compressor wheel resulting in a 20 percent increase in the turbocharger boost. The net result that drivers care about is an extra 20 horsepower and 30 more foot pounds of torque from the previous engine. “BMW engines can be efficient and at the same time deliciously fun to drive, without needing outrageous power or torque numbers to feel or sound gloriously potent,” Murphy continued. “In the 3-Series, the brand’s volume crown jewel, it’s all about leveraging the inline architecture and the sensation of perpetual balance.”
