BMW and smartphone owners will soon be able to conveniently identify the best rates and times for charging their electronic vehicles at home via the BMW Smart Charging App.

In a press release, BMW announced that the BMW Smart Charging App “has the potential to save customers as much as $400 annually on their electric bills.”

“By automating the at-home charging planning process with the BMW Smart Charging App, we are offering BMW i (electric vehicles) customers greater convenience and helping them conserve energy while maximizing their cost savings,” said Jose Guerrero, Product Manager and U.S. Product Planning and Strategy for BMW i, BMW of North America.

BMW owners who drive any of the company’s i vehicles, which can be found at Chapman BMW on Camelback, will be able to access the app once it becomes available to the public. The app will be available to all Android and iOS devices.

As of now, the BMW Smart Charging App is in its initial testing phase and is only available to BMW Electronauts. Electronauts are electric vehicle enthusiasts who leased a BMW ActiveE as part of the company’s field trial which began in 2012.

The BMW Smart Charging App will be integrated with the BMW i Remote App. This will allow for drivers to access their detailed vehicle information through their smartphones at any time. According to BMW’s website, this includes “range display, battery condition and charge level, service messages and vehicle location.”

BMW owners will also be given the opportunity to control the climate of the passenger cell via their smartphone, so that their vehicle is already set to their ideal temperature, and also supports route planning.

Unfortunately for eager BMW i owners, the BMW Smart Charging App will not become available to all BMW i3 and BMW i8 owners in the U.S. until 2015.
