All brands of gasoline are not the same. The gas at one station is different from the gas at the station down the street. It is similar to how different brands of apple juice don’t taste the same and have varying amounts of vitamins depending on the types of apples used in the juice. Brands of gas have different additives that increase performance, clean while they burn, and reduce emissions. In 1995, the EPA put a minimum limit on additives for gas sold in the United States. Since then, each brand of gas must contain a certain amount of additives that reduce emissions and reduce the amount of byproduct deposit (basically engine gunk) that get left in the engine after being burned. These additives keep fuel injectors and intake valves from getting clogged quickly which maintains optimum engine performance and gas efficiency. The cleaner your engine is, the more efficiently it runs, which is good for the environment and your wallet.

As engines evolved, automakers began to recommend a higher minimum standard in order to ensure their new advanced engines would not be marginalized by decade-old standards. In response to this, automakers like Mercedes-Benz and BMW developed their own standards known as Top Tier™. In order to gain a Top Tier™ designation, a gasoline must have higher standards of engine cleaning performance by having higher levels of detergent in the gas. It can’t have any metallic additives and must be available at all of the fuel marketers stations.

Almost everyone is familiar with the three choices at the pump, low octane, usually 87, being the cheapest and high octane, usually 91, being the most expensive. Its important to note that Top Tier™ gasoline isn’t an octane level but is a designation for brands of gas that meet higher standards than EPA minimums. Top tier vehicles like those sold at Chapman BMW on Camelback, should be filled up with Top Tier™ gas in order to maintain the advanced engines high levels of performance. Look for the Top Tier™ logo at your gas station to ensure the gas you’re using has the highest standards of fuel.  To see a list of retailers that sell Top Tier™, visit

The BMW Concept X5 eDrive

The BMX Concept X5 Plug-in Hybrid

BMW has always been on the cutting edge of new technology. They were among some of the first engineers to introduce hybrid technology in their mass produced vehicles. They are currently unveiling new models in the 2,3 and 4 series that feature ultra modern diesel engines that shatter preconceived notions of loud, polluting diesel engines from previous decades. These new models and engines will be available soon at Chapman BMW on Camelback. Also, BMW is unveiling new plug-in hybrid cars like the new midsize concept X5 and the super sleek, modern and powerful i8 sports car. The electronic system used by BMW allows the plug-in hybrids to get up to 40mpg and reach speeds up to 75 mph only using electric power.

In April, the project director for the X5 hybrid plug-in told reporters at BMW’s headquarters in North America that the X5 is, “a connecting step” between the i-series sports cars and BMW’s conventional gas powered models. While no announcements have been made yet about when the X5 will be mass-produced, BMW spokesman Manfred Porschenrieder says that the current goal for BMW is to release a plug-in hybrid for each and every major model series. Porschenrieder said that mass-producing the X5 would be a great leap in technology for BMW because it will be one of the first beautiful midsize (or any size) SUVs to exist in a plug-in world dominated by unstylish small cars. The X5 will not sacrifice safety, weight, passenger space, style or performance in its quest to rule the plug-in world. Porschenrieder also said the price will not go up by an unreasonable amount either. It seems his goal is to change nothing but the power source from gas only to hybrid technology. He said, “it totally makes sense for us for to hybridize such a car.” The X5 is still a concept car and it will be another year or two until it and other plug-ins are mass-produced. The 2014 4 Series Convertible

The new BMW inventory has gotten a multitude of upgrades this spring. 2014 models will now have more engine options and all BMW’s, except for the X6, will see technological advancements in safety come standard. For example, all standard 2014 models (minus the X6) will come equipped with tire pressure indicators that measure pressure in each tire individually. Maintaining correct tire pressure will save BMW owners money on gas, improve vehicle performance and increase safety. New engine options now include the modern diesel option, which blows away all preconceived notions one might have about a noisy, pollutant-spewing diesel from the 90’s. BMW is also bringing the 4-wheel drive system into the 21st century with the intelligent all-wheel drive system called BMW xDrive. The xDrive will available for the first time on models such as the 4-series convertible.

BMW radio options and navigation system also see a 2014 overhaul and include upgrades such as a navigation system that uploads images 10-times faster than before on its 16.5 inch control display. Both the radio and navigation systems will get new control panels with better computing performance than those from last year. Bluetooth audio streaming will now be available as well as more BMW ConnectedDrive services.

BMW’s 2 series will feature two new vehicles with diesel engine options as well as more options in transmissions. The 218d and 225d both boast 2-liter, 4-cylinder diesel engines with TwinPower Turbo technology  – exclusive to BMW. Both models come standard with 6-speed transmissions. The 218d has an optional, awe-inspiring, 8-speed Steptronic transmission. The new BMW 3 series Gran Turismo features a more modern look and will come standard with a 6-cylinder engine and 8-speed Steptronic transmission. The xDrive system will be available for the first time on two new 3 series models as well. New 3 series models are the 330d GT, the 330d xDrive GT and the 335d xDrive GT.

The 4 series upgrades are similar to the 3 series in that more engine options are now available as well as more models with xDrive. Exclusive to the 4 series are the new spring 2014 custom options. The 4 series will now feature many more customizable options tailored for each individual buyer. 4 series models are now available with premium materials used for interior trim as well as more tire sizes and lightweight-alloy wheels. 4 series models will also have more options as far as exterior paint colors and Merino leather steering wheel options. New 4 series models include the 425d coupe, the 430d xDrive coupe and the 428i xDrive convertible.
