2015 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe Coming Fall 2014

BMW is turning the coupe market on its head with the introduction of the 2015 BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe. Based off the already stylish 4-Series coupe, BMW has decided to go ahead with a four-door design of the 4-Series, much like the 6-Series Gran Coupe. In reality, this is how it breaks down: the 4-Series Gran Coupe is the four-door version of the two-door 4-Series coupe, which is itself a two-door version of the 4-door 3-Series.

Got it? Nobody said BMW ever makes it easy on its customers.

The niche the BMW 4-Series Gran Coupe is aiming to fill is a relatively small one, though BMW has found much success in these smaller, unique automotive niches. What sets the 4-Series Gran Coupe apart from the 3-Series four-door sedan is that the 4-Series Gran Coupe has the elegance and styling of its two-door brethren. The Gran Coupe is a more functional version of the 4-Series coupe without sacrificing design.

The 4-Series Gran Coupe’s sloping roofline and short rear deck make it a handsome coupe. The 4-Series Gran Coupe is also a hatchback, making it very practical.

Out of the gate, there are two model offerings associated with the 4-Series Gran Coupe—the 428i and 435i. A turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 240 hp powers the 428i. The 435i has a turbocharged straight-six 3.0-liter mill.

The 3.0-liter engine produces 300 horsepower. The four-pot motor will rocket the 428i from 0 to 60 mph in a respectable 5.7 seconds. The straight-six motor rockets the 435i from 0 to 60 in just 4.9 seconds. The 428i is good for 23 mpg in the city and 35 on the highway, while the 435i achieves 22 and 32 mpg respectively.

Both models come with rear-wheel drive as standard, but BMW’s all-wheel-drive xDrive system is an available option for those who don’t experience year-round sunshine. The only transmission available is a ZF sourced eight-speed automatic.
