2014 BMW M-Series Debut at Detroit Auto Show

2015 BMW M4 coupe

The BMW M-Series is one of the most coveted brands in the automotive performance world. Initially created to facilitate BMW’s racing program in the 1960s and 70s, the M-series began to supplement BMW’s vehicles portfolio with specially modified higher trim models for consumers who like uncompromised performance. At this year’s Detroit Auto Show, BMW unveiled the 2015 BMW M3 sedan and M4 coupe. In 2012, with the release of the then new 3-series, BMW discontinued the 3-series coupe, regulating it to its own model, the 4-series. The 4-series sits on a highly reworked 3-series platform for added performance and agility.

The new M3 and M4 pack a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine. The engine produces a potent 425 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque.

The standard transmission is a six-speed manual that automatically revs on downshifts. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is an option; it provides quicker shifts in exchange for the added weight.

BMW says both the M3 and M4 will sprint from 0-to-60 in 4.1 seconds with the six-speed manual transmission. Cars equipped with the automatic drops that number to 3.9 seconds. Top speed is governed to 155 mph, though there should be an option to raise it to 174 mph available. The automaker says the M3 and M4 will be 25 percent more efficient than the models they replace.

M GmbH reworked the M3 and M4 underpinnings over the more pedestrian 3- and 4-series cars. A carbon-fiber strut brace creeps its way through the engine bay. An electronically controlled rear differential called Active M Differential, which coms from the M5 and M6, is standard equipment. Both vehicles have wider tracks than the base 3- and 4-series and have aggressive styling that matches their performance numbers. The front ends have massive intakes for an extra aggressive look.

Prices for the M3 and M4 are still unknown, but should be known closer to their stateside launch this spring. For the latest 2015 BMW M3 and M4 information, check out the nearest BMW dealership.
