History of the BMW Art Car Collection.

The BMW Art Car Collection started with the BMW racing car designed by Alexander Calder in 1975. The first BMW vehicles to form the subjects of visual art were racing cars used in the Le Mans 24 Hour Race. Calder was followed by other American artists. In 1976, Frank Stella designed a BMW 3.0 CSL with a geometric pattern resembling graph paper. In 1977, Roy Lichtenstein created a flowing pattern of lines reflecting the roads and landscape passed by the car. In 1979, Andy Warhol attempted to project a visual sense of speed on a BMW M1.

Robert Rauschenberg’s BMW 635 CSi incorporates motifs taken from classic works of art and photographs depicting the natural world. In 1982, Ernst Fuchs also painted a BMW 635 CSi where he turned the body into a projection for his own powers of imagination. During the 1980s, the collection was expanded internationally: The “Art Cars of the Continents” started in Australia in 1989 where Michael Jagamara Nelson, brought up in the tradition of the aborigines, and exponent of western art Ken Done were each given a BMW M3 to design.

2011 BMW X3
BMW wants people to know that its new X3 crossover comes in all sorts of flavors — and that it is built in the U.S. BMW will get these messages across both in the TV spots and through a new social-media push.

The campaign features a two-year lease on the vehicle for the person who gets the exact configuration of the X3 featured in the spot. “The X3 Matchup” program running through Feb. 10 directs consumers to BMW’s USA Facebook page, where they can upload one configuration try per day.

BMW says the point of the program is to talk about the fact that there are almost 10 million configurations for the X3, and that the crossover vehicle is being built at BMW’s U.S. plant in Spartanburg, S.C. The winner of the contest gets a trip for two to the plant to pick up the vehicle, a tour of the facilities, and a two-day performance driving school class at the BMW Performance Center there. The company will also give awards to 10 other winners.

“The X3 Matchup allows us to highlight, in a fun way, the near-infinite number of ways BMW customers can personalize a new X3 and the fact that this vehicle is made right here in America,” said BMW marketing communications and consumer events manager, Trudy Hardy.

Another brand — Hyundai — is using the game and the weeks prior to tout its 2011 Elantra and Sonata vehicles.

BMW Crowd for Pre-Owned BMW sales increase of 74%

Chapman BMW on Camelback closed out 2010 with record numbers for sales.  Our Pre-Owned department finished off the year with a 74%, yes, SEVENTY FOUR PERCENT, increase in sales!  Impressive you say, and we agree as did BMW of North America.  At their suggestion we hosted a visit from over 60 members of the BMW Canada dealerships last week.  They were given a tour of our Chapman BMW on Camelback facilities and also had a Q & A session with our Pre-Owned Sales Manager (Newly Appointed General Sales Manager for Chapman BMW on Camelback!) – Bob Colabianchi, who also gave a presentation of our procedures and development in sales that contributed greatly to the growth in sales.  They were also treated to a presentation by one of our top salesman on what it takes to acheive and maintain this kind of growth with new and existing customer databases.

It was a great day and a pleasure to entertain the visit and meet with our fellow BMW dealership members.  After a nice lunch at the Hotel Valley Ho in Scottsdale, the visitors piled back into their travel buses, hopefully with new ideas and fresh thoughts on how to increase their sales for 2011 and many years to come!

News of a new BMW X1 variant will certainly excite Europeans, but the engine within matters to markets around the world — including North America. After all, the 2011 X1 xDrive28i crossover is the first application of BMW’s new turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

The new four-cylinder is based off the automaker’s famed inline six architecture, and is essentially a shortened form of the N55 single-turbo 3.0-liter I-6 currently used in a number of its xDrive35i and sDrive35i model ranges, albeit with two cylinders lopped off.

In European form, the new four-cylinder puts out 245 horsepower at 5000 rpm, and delivers a solid and 258 pound-feet of torque from 1250 rpm. The turbo four should be fairly efficient, an estimate by BMW, the engine placed within the X1 will allow its small crossover to achieve 29.8 mpg on the European combined test cycle.

According to BMW officials, this engine will not be offered in U.S.-spec X1s, but confirm this engine is destined for the U.S. in other models. We have already heard the Z4 roadster is due to receive this engine sometime next year, but knowing BMW’s knack for dispersing engines across its portfolio, there is a good chance we will see it in volume models like the 1- and 3 Series lines.

Like this X1? Then you will love the X3! Check out our inventory at Chapman BMW on Camelback for all your BMW needs.
